A quotation for your installation
The right price depends on circuit count, protective devices, access and the condition of your wiring. Request a quotation that confirms the scope, testing, certification and any remedial work.
Built around your property
Homeowners
Consumer unit upgrades planned around your existing wiring, circuit requirements and available space.
Landlords
Replacement where an electrical assessment identifies defects or unsuitable protection.
Property professionals
Review board suitability for extensions, kitchen upgrades and changing electrical demand.
Managing & letting agents
Plan tenant access, temporary power isolation and records around property schedules.
What your replacement includes
A consumer unit replacement involves assessment, safe circuit transfer and testing, as well as fitting the new board.
Existing installation
Review the board, visible wiring, circuit count, access and known electrical concerns before defining the scope.
Earthing & bonding
Check that earthing, main protective bonding and relevant supply equipment are suitable for the altered installation.
Board & circuit protection
Select suitable capacity and protective devices for the installation, considering surge protection where applicable.
Safe circuit transfer
Isolate the supply, remove the old board and reconnect circuits securely. Unsafe circuits need appropriate action before reconnection.
Inspection & testing
Inspect and test the completed work, check protective-device operation and clearly identify each circuit.
Tested work.
Clear records.
Your Electrical Installation Certificate records the replacement work and its test results. Keep it with your property documents.
Confirm the applicable Building Regulations compliance route and documentation with your installer. These records serve a different purpose from the electrical certificate.
At handover
- Electrical Installation Certificate and test results
- Clearly labelled circuits
- Applicable compliance documentation
- Handover information for protective devices
Suitable protection. Clear circuit control.
- Equipment selected for the installation and its circuits.
- Inspection and testing of the completed replacement.
- Clear labelling and records for future maintenance.
From assessment to handover
Assessment & quotation
Review the board, circuit count, access and known concerns. Agree the equipment and scope.
Isolation & replacement
Isolate power, remove the old board and fit the new consumer unit with organised circuit connections.
Inspection & testing
Verify the completed work and connected circuits, including protective-device operation.
Certification & handover
Label the board, provide the appropriate records and explain the new protective devices.
When should you consider an upgrade?
Age alone does not decide whether a fuse box needs replacing. Review its condition, protection and suitability when concerns arise.
- Damage, overheating or repeated tripping
- Missing or inadequate circuit protection
- Defects identified during an electrical assessment
- Alterations that change electrical demand
Different properties.
Practical planning.
Occupied & rented homes
Arrange access and discuss the expected loss of power before work begins. Timing depends on circuit count, testing and existing wiring.
- Coordinate tenant access and property schedules
- Discuss temporary power isolation in advance
- Retain certification with property records
Alterations & added demand
An extension, kitchen upgrade, EV charger or heat pump can change electrical requirements. Assess whether the existing board remains suitable.
- Review circuit count and board capacity
- Consider earthing, bonding and protective devices
- Explain any additional remedial work
Why choose FRA Expert?
FRA Expert follows a structured approach: assess the installation, select suitable equipment, complete the work, test the result and provide clear documentation.
If testing identifies wiring defects, additional remedial work may be needed. The findings and required action should be explained so you understand the next steps.
Prepare for your installation
Share any recent EICR, electrical certificate and details of known faults. Confirm access to the consumer unit and agree the expected downtime.
Ask what the quotation includes and how unexpected defects will be handled. Keep the completed installation records for future electrical work.

Frequently Asked
Questions
Does an old fuse box always need replacing?
No. Age alone does not make a board unsafe. Its condition, protection, suitability for alterations and any defects found during assessment determine whether replacement is needed.
How long does a consumer unit replacement take?
Many straightforward domestic replacements can be completed within a working day. Circuit count, access, testing and wiring condition can affect timing. Discuss expected power downtime before the appointment.
What documents will I receive?
An Electrical Installation Certificate should record the replacement work and test results. Confirm the applicable Building Regulations compliance documentation with your installer and retain both with your property records.
Is an EICR needed before every replacement?
A separate full EICR is not automatically required before every replacement. The electrician must assess the installation and complete the necessary inspection and testing. Wider concerns may justify an EICR.
How do RCBOs protect individual circuits?
An RCBO combines overcurrent and residual-current protection for an individual circuit. This can limit the effect of one fault on unrelated circuits. The suitable arrangement depends on the installation.
What if testing finds wiring defects?
Additional remedial work may be needed. The findings and proposed action should be explained, and unsafe circuits must not simply be reconnected without appropriate action.
